Baringo: Kabarnet residents' long walk in search of water

 

Frustrated residents of Kabarnet town and its environs in Baringo Central have been forced to seek alternative water sources after electricity to Kirandich Dam was disconnected due to unpaid power bills.

The disconnection has left taps dry, forcing many locals to trek long distances to River Kiberenge to fetch water for domestic use.

Kabarnet has experienced similar water shortages in the past, raising growing concerns among residents who are now calling for a lasting solution to the persistent crisis.

This comes even as the laying of pipes for the Kirandich Water Phase II project is still ongoing.

Residents have accused the Baringo County leadership of neglect, citing delays in addressing the power payment issue that has crippled water supply services.

There are also fears that residents may resort to unsafe and contaminated water sources, especially with the ongoing rains, which could expose children and families to waterborne diseases.

Kirandich Water Company Manager, Richard Ruto, said that the company is struggling to clear its electricity arrears, saying part of the payments depend on allocations from the county government.
